"The vineyard of Chatom Vineyards is nestled in the breathtaking Esmeralda Valley of the Sierra Foothills in County. The valley was originally planted with low field crops, fruits and nut trees. When Gay Callan, owner and native San Franciscan, purchased the property in 1980, her vision was to plant a vineyard. Her first varietals were then planted in 1981, totaling 21 acres of Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. Today, the vineyard boasts 13 varietals planted on 65 acres, including Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah, Sangiovese and 5 Portuguese varietals. The 2007 Gitano is made from 100% estate sourced Sangiovese from Chatom's Esmeralda Valley vineyard. This vineyard's warm days and cool evenings provide the perfect climate for cultivating Sangiovese. The variable soils from clay to sandy loam and shallow rocky strata have all proven to produce award winning grapes. Look for aromas of ripe, sun-soaked strawberries and currant with hints of milk chocolate. Taste fresh berries and cherries, light anise and vanilla with a spicy, refreshing finish. This wine is excellent by the glass and ideal for barbecues. Also try it with prosciutto, salami, pasta dishes with tomato sauce, grilled sausages and meats and cheeses. Drink now through 2013."*
Reviews from the staff of Nifty-Home-Bar.com
The California Chatom Vineyards, 2007 Gitano Sangiovese Calaveras County, provides a truly unique wine tasting experience. At once, the aroma swaddles the mind with comforting associations of warm, cheery bakeries and fresh blueberry muffins. Coupled with subtle hints of chocolate liqueur, heavy berry hangs on the nose. It is not a misleading wine. Notes of raspberry strike the tongue, whilst suggestions of milk chocolate flirtatiously appear. From the first moment's splash, to the ebbing traces as the last sip slowly fades to mouth's memory, this wine retains a full brightness throughout. Perfect for a tartaric late afternoon indulgence or brighten up a power lunch with a glass. Chewy and full of personality, this wine is an appetizer unto itself, but just as easily, it can support heavy dishes. Equally appropriate, enjoy with a dessert such as a rich chocolate tart. Surprisingly full for a Sangiovese, this wine is genuinely a one glass wonder.

The 2007 Gitano Sangiovese Calaveras County, California is a very bright, light wine suitable for lunchtime. The tart flavors of raspberries and sour cherries is balanced by some tannic acidity. Not too heavy, it is a red that should appeal to those who enjoy a bright wine on a bright, sunny day.
